Medium Raw

A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook

by Anthony Bourdain

1

A lot has changed since Kitchen Confidential.

From journeyman cook to globe-travelling professional, Anthony Bourdain found himself holed up in the Carribean, driving drunk and way too fast over unlit golf courses and along cliff edges. Something had to change.

Medium Raw explores these changes, moving back and forth from the author's bad old days to the present, tracking his strange and unexpected voyage and pausing along the way for a series of confessions, rants and interrogations of some of the most controversial figures in food.

Beginning with a secret and highly illegal after-hours gathering of powerful chefs in New York, and delving into the real nature of fatherhood, Bourdain, in his distinctive, no-holds barred style, cuts to the bone on every subject he tackles.

Young Mandela

by David James Smith

Nelson Mandela is the world’s greatest idol, universally recognised as a leader who symbolises moral authority. He has been mythologised as a flawless hero of the liberation struggle. But how exactly did his early personal and political life shape the triumphs to come?

This book goes behind the myth to find the man who people have forgotten or never knew – Young Mandela, the committed freedom fighter, the ‘terrorist’ enemy of racist white South Africa who left his wife and children behind to go on the run from the police in the early 1960s.

For the first time, we have evidence of a specific personal motivation for Mandela’s fight against apartheid, and the book sheds light on the significant extent to which Mandela relied on white activists – a part of South African history the ANC has ignored or tried to bury. Mandela’s historic achievements came with a heavy price – this biography graphically describes the emotional turmoil he left in his wake.

After meticulous research, and taking a lead from Mandela’s trusted circle, the author discovers much that is new, with many surprising, sometimes shocking details which will enhance our understanding of the world’s elder statesman. Sanctified, lionised, it turns out that Mandela is a human being after all, only too aware of his flaws and shortcomings.

This re-evaluation of Nelson Mandela’s political and personal life before his long imprisonment dramatically revises our view of its subject. With unique access to people and papers, culminating in a meeting with Nelson Mandela himself, David James Smith has written the single most important contribution to our knowledge of this global icon.

Portrait With Keys

The City of Johannesburg Unlocked

by Ivan Vladislavic

1

In the wake of apartheid, Johannesburg has changed - still divided, but now as much by poverty and violence as by race. Through precisely crafted snapshots, Ivan Vladislavic observes the unpredictable, day-to-day transformation of his embattled city: the homeless people using manholes as cupboards;a public statue slowly cannibalized for scrap. Most poignantly he charts the small, devastating changes along the post-apartheid streets: walls grow higher; neighborhoods are gated; the keys multiply. Security - insecurity? - is the growth industry

A dazzling work of reportage, this prize-winning book has confirmed Vladislavic as "one of the most imaginative minds at work in South African literature today" (Andre Brink). In Portrait With Keys he delivers "one of the best things ever written about a great, if schizophrenic, city and an utterly true picture of the new South Africa" (Christopher Hope).

Gavin's Greetings

We are showcasing a different branch each month. Or give each branch their own chance in the spotlight. As this month is Bryanston's turn to showcase it's cupboard books, and as it is the branch where I do all my work, I thought it fitting to start with this shop.

It has been a busy few weeks in Bryanston. What with the marking and preparing of A. J. Crosbie's deceased estate sale. We had a great response. Thanks to all who read your emails and came to browse and buy.

We have also just received some fantastic holiday reads.

We are bursting at the seams. We realise that this is what a 'Best Used Book Shop' should look like, but it can be a little overwhealming at times. Do come and relieve us from some of our new stock and collecibles.

We also have some wonderful Rhodesiana, travellers and explorers, and decorative sets of books. These will be a lovely addition to anybody's library.

And don't forget those best sellers and childrens books. We have plenty to keep you occupied. We have something for the whole family.

Congratulations
